What is AI SEO?

The two halves of AI SEO

Search behaviour is changing. A growing share of product and service research now starts with a question typed into an AI assistant, not a list of blue links. If your site isn't structured so machines can understand, extract and cite it, you're invisible in that channel. AI SEO is the discipline of staying visible — both to the search engines and to the answer engines.

Half one: AI doing SEO. This is the use of AI tooling inside the SEO process itself — keyword research at scale, content gap analysis, drafting, meta description generation, internal-link suggestions, technical audits. Used well, it makes an SEO team faster; the human sets strategy and judgement, the AI does the heavy lifting. This half is mostly about efficiency.

Half two: SEO for AI. This is the newer and more important half. AI answer engines don't rank pages the way Google's classic results do — they read, summarise and cite. To be cited, a page has to be citable: it must answer questions directly, in quotable chunks, backed by clear structure that machines can parse. The practices have names you'll see around — AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) — but the work is concrete:

  • Direct answers first. Each page answers one question clearly in its opening lines — the "short answer" pattern — so an AI can lift it verbatim.
  • Structured Q&A. FAQ sections written as real questions with real answers, marked up with FAQ schema so machines know exactly what they're reading.
  • Entity clarity. Structured data (organisation, service and breadcrumb schema) that tells machines what you are: your company, your services, where you operate. An entity graph, not just keywords.
  • Machine-readable site summaries. Files like `llms.txt` that give AI systems a clean, factual summary of what the site offers — no navigation chrome, no marketing fog.

An illustrative example, not a CrestVibe client: a local accountancy firm wants to be the answer when people ask an AI assistant how freelancers handle VAT. The old approach was a keyword-optimised blog post. The AI SEO approach: a page that answers the question in its first paragraph (the quotable short answer), an FAQ section covering the five follow-up questions people actually ask, FAQ schema marking them up, and organisation schema confirming who the firm is — so the assistant lifts the firm's answer and cites the firm.

This is, factually, how CrestVibe handles its own site: FAQ schema generated from the same data as the visible FAQs, a structured entity graph describing the company and its services, per-page structured answers, and answer-engine targeting as a standing practice. We describe it as our approach, not as a result — we don't claim rankings. The point is that AI SEO isn't theory for us; it's what our own site is built on.

What AI SEO is not

The gimmicks are worth naming because they're everywhere. AI-generated content spam — publishing hundreds of thin articles nobody asked for — is the classic one. Answer engines are getting better at recognising content with no original thinking behind it, and even when it ranks briefly, it doesn't convert: readers can tell. A related gimmick is keyword-stuffed "optimisation" done by tools that rewrite your pages until they read like they were written for robots, because they were.

The honest version of AI SEO is almost boring: answer real questions well, structure the answers so machines can find them, describe your business in structured data, and keep everything factual. The AI is an amplifier — it makes good content more findable and bad content more obviously bad.

AI SEO and the rest of your marketing

AI SEO doesn't replace the other channels; it connects to them. The same clear, structured, factual content that answer engines cite is also what converts the humans who arrive afterward — a visitor who found you through an AI answer still reads your pages, checks your services and contacts you. And the content discipline overlaps with social media automation: consistent, structured content repurposed across channels, with humans setting the strategy and systems handling the distribution.

For businesses that want this handled end to end — the research, the content, the structured data, the ongoing optimisation — that's exactly what our AI digital marketing agency service covers.

Answers, up front

Common questions.

It extends it. The foundations — fast pages, good content, real authority — haven't changed. What's new is the second audience: AI systems that answer questions directly rather than listing links. AI SEO adds the practices that serve that audience: quotable answers, FAQ schema, entity graphs and machine-readable summaries. If your SEO ignores answer engines, you're optimising for half the traffic.
Sometimes, briefly — but that's the wrong question. The question is whether it converts and whether it lasts. Thin AI-generated content tends to do neither: search engines and answer engines both increasingly favour content with genuine expertise behind it, and readers bounce from pages that say nothing. AI is best used to research, draft and analyse; the thinking still has to be yours.
Watch two things: citations (are AI assistants mentioning or linking to you when asked about your services?) and the humans who arrive (does that traffic contact you?). Rankings in the classic sense matter less than they used to; what matters is being the source the machines quote. We won't promise positions — no honest agency can — but the structure that makes you citable is measurable and improvable. Being cited starts with being clear. If you want your business visible to both search engines and AI answer engines, our AI digital marketing agency team builds the whole thing: strategy, content, structured data and ongoing optimisation.
